Information and communications technology has enormous potential for transforming our healthcare delivery systems. Managing health and medical data in electronic format and extracting better understanding from it brings significant technical challenges that have to be resolved. These include how to store and manage large amounts of complex and disparate data; how to facilitate efficient information retrieval by diverse stakeholders with different objectives; balancing data privacy concerns against clinical and research benefits of data availability; and how to extract knowledge from data to contribute to healthcare decision making. The incorporation of specialised data types and multiple data sources to support broader operational and evidence related aspects of healthcare is also important. This includes diverse areas such as biomedical imaging, data coding, diagnosis and treatment guidelines, genome/phenome data, interactive multi-media, and physiological signals.
